This Cinco De Mayo: Guac This Way {all night long}

This Cinco De Mayo: Guac This Way {all night long}

I’m not trying to gloat but, I really love where I live.

When Chris and I made the cross-country “trek” to Los Angeles (ahem, a 5-hour flight with two pissed off kitty-cats in tow) there were a few things I was looking forward to the most. The landscape, of course. Good God, do I appreciate our vast mountain range that has served as a grande venue for countless hikes, and most recently, grounds for the prettiest wildflower super blooms you could ever imagine.

I was also stoked for the culture - which is definitely more of a melting pot than I could’ve ever experienced in Florida. It’s so funny to me that still, so many people think L.A. is just made up of Hollywood and Beverly Hills. You guys, the diversity of neighborhoods here never ceases to amaze me. From the iconic and wild, Venice Beach to the delicious and delightfully gritty Koreatown (“K-town”) to the awe-inspiring streets of DTLA’s Art’s district, I never run out of inspiration.

Inspiration for fashion. Inspiration for home design. And most importantly, inspiration for food. Which brings me to the 3rd thing I was looking forward to the most. The freaking food. Because in my opinion, L.A. trumps SF’s food scene (I’m gonna get it for that one) and isn’t toooo far below the likes of New York (please notice the deliberate italic and extra o’s on that one).

And to add to that, there is one cuisine where we’ll always rank supreme. Mexican. Some of the nation’s best taco trucks and Baja brick and mortars reside here. I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that I’ve picked up some culinary tricks from them over the last few years too.

Prime example: my tried-and-true deceivingly basic guacamole. Just add margaritas and you’ll be all set come May 5th, aka, Cinco De Mayo.

What makes my guacamole a little special? The cumin. And also, the fresh garlic. But don’t just take my word for it. This guac takes like 5 minutes to prepare. So just go on with your bad self and, do it. Feel free to change it up to make it "your own" while you're at it, too.

Not-so-basic 5 minute Guacamole

Ingredients:

2 California avocados, seed removed and peeled

1/3 cup red onion, finely chopped

1/4 cup cilantro, chopped

3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime

3 tablespoons tomato, finely chopped

2-3 garlic cloves, minced

2 teaspoons Olive oil

2 teaspoons cumin

2 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper

1 teaspoon jalapeno, minced

Directions, Combine all ingredients in medium to large size bowl. Using a large fork or spoon, break apart and mash avocado and combine with other ingredients.

**Makes 2-3 servings. Double recipe for party-sized app.
